How to Replace a Missing Piece of Trim
Don't you just hate it when you pick up a dresser, and it has a missing piece of trim? Or maybe part of a leg or corner is chipped off? Wood filler will definitely not do the job. Have you ever heard of the hot glue mold method? Let me show you how it works.
I found this dresser that was missing piece of trim around the edge of a drawer. Another drawer had a copy of the exact trim that I needed. First I gathered my supplies.
- Hot glue gun
- Lots of glue sticks
- Disposable bowl and spoon or stick
- Cooking spray
- Bondo body filler
- Sander
- Glue (I used Gorilla heavy duty construction adhesive)
1. Pick a spot with matching trim and clean it well. Then spray well with cooking spray. My piece of trim was loose, so I just pulled it off. But this isn't necessary.
2. Completely cover with a thick layer of hot glue (not the bottom flat side). And yes, this will use a lot of glue sticks.
3. Carefully peel the hot glue mold off the wood. You now have your mold.
4. Spray the inside of the mold with cooking spray.
5. Mix the Bondo and hardener in a disposable bowl. I use a wood stick.
6. Press the Bondo into the mold and smooth the flat top. This will eliminate some of the sanding later.
7. When fully hardened, (about 30 minutes) remove Bondo from mold and sand smooth. As you can see, I still had to add some wood filler to a few spots.
8. Make sure the surfaces are dust free, and use glue to attach the missing piece. Clamp firmly until dry.
9. Paint over it and no one will ever know.
If you give this a try to replace a missing piece of trim, post a picture. I would love to see your results. Also, don't forget you can order your missing or broken drawers slides here.
